I just hope I do not make this bike look so good that I will not want to ride it. I might get it to the blaster place on Monday and start final prep for the paint job in the middle of the week. I put bolts into all of the threaded holes tonight and will mask off the VIN with some masking tape tomorrow. I still need to take a few measurements of my decal locations and take a few pictures of my old decals - to make replacing them easier. I do not have the frame at the blasting shop yet but I did get a look at some of their other motorcycle blasting jobs and it is quite possible that I might not need both primers. Like most paint things, it is all about good surface preparation, sanding out any runs, and getting good coverage in the color coat. I have seen some very nice looking rattle can paint jobs around here. And because of the possible pitting of the metal from the sand blasting, he recommended a black primer that had more body to it so that it could build up the surface a little. The Sherwin Williams guy said that because I was blasting my old paint down to bare metal, he recommended an etching primer to start. The frame goes to the blaster people as soon as I can get my VIN plate masked off and old bolts into the threaded frame holes to protect the threads. I got two spray cans worth of this stuff which should be plenty to spray my bike. Just tell the clerk that you want to shoot this with your Binks or Devillbiss gun and they will mix it accordingly. This recipe is also compatible with a spray gun. Your local Sherwin Williams store should be able to mix you a small batch to take home if you want to look at it first before you buy a can. No clear coat is necessary but you might consider it to keep your new decals tacked down. It needs an etching gray (suggested) primer underneath a black regular primer. We picked a few spots on the bike that had not seen much sun for thirty eight years and came up with what I think is a very good match. I had darkened the doors of O'Reilly Auto Parts, Lowes, Home Depot, Tractor Supply Center and the John Deere Tractor store and found nothing that was close enough to this shade of green. After getting my 1973 Honda Mighty Green ST90K0 frame dismantled down to nothing, I was able to get it down to the local Sherwin Williams Automotive Paint distributor for a little color matching.
